Xena, the Warrior Pup
April is Autism awareness month and before it is over you should meet Jonny and his warrior puppy Xena who has transformed him. Xena herself was transformed from a very sick, abused pup (warning--photos are graphic) and as dogs do, returned the favor.

Fresh Pup of Bel Air
So the Fresh Prince of Bel Air starred Will Smith, Philly hometown guy. Maybe that's why I love this pet parody but either way its great!

More Derby Buzz
Some more backside buzz from Churchill Downs where the horses are getting in their pre-Derby workouts.
I still like Orb and Revolutionary but don't rule out Vyjack, who trained for a while at Fair Hill, while recuperating from a lung infection. He looks very good to me.

A Warning From Sierra
A penny contins zinc which can get into a dog's bloodstream and kill them. Please keep your loose change away from curious pups.

Elite Military Dogs
In case you missed it, 60 Minutes on Sunday night had an amazing feature about these elite dogs that are on the front lines. It's a little long for a blog, but well worth your time, if you have it.

Simba Goes to School
Simba, the cat, has been roaming the halls of this Maine High School for about thirteen years and seems to relish the attention. The feeling, apparently, is mutual.

Rock on Ronan!
Ronan, the sea lion, is the first non-human mammal to demonstrate that she can keep a beat and she does it very well. This suggests that rhythmic abilities maybe much more wide spread in the animal kingdom than previously thought.
Rock on Ronan!

Cat Fight
Cat fight at the Hemingway Museum in Key West! I've been here and the cats are everywhere! They are perhaps some of the most contented cats I have ever seen--you would be too if you had such nice digs to call home.
It is a shame that the government has to get enmeshed in this situation. As far as I can tell, the cats are extremely well cared for and do no harm. I could think of far more important jobs for the Feds to be doing (drug enforcement, perhaps in the waters off Key West) than cat patrol.
Our tax dollars at work...

Home Wanted
Sometimes in the face of tragedy, it is healing to do good. Anybody fit the criteria in the video above and willing to take in this pair of German shepherds who are each other's eyes and ears?
If not, sharing the request is just as good.
Swimmers Syndrome
I once had a pup who was born with swimmer syndrome and I patterned her on burlap to each her how to walk. The burlap gave her traction and she learned to walk perfectly! Things are not always what they seem a and a little bit of kindness and patience go a long way.

Pets as Cargo?
View more videos at: http://nbcbayarea.com.
This is shocking stuff. Animals in transit, between owners, are considered cargo and as such, airlines are not required to report what happens to them en route. Over 500 citations have been issued against the airlines but they still refuse to be accountable.
Moral of the story: If you have to ship a dog, do it with a pet-only airline or hit the road.

Reunion
Smiles all around in Dallas yesterday when Lyla, a pup from Afghanistan, was reunited with her best buddy, Airman Tom Burright. The two met when Burright was deployed but in order for him to transport her back to the states with him, he had to come up with $4000, which he did not have.
Enter The Puppy Rescue Mission, an organization that fell in love with the video Burright had sent them. They raised the money in 6 hours!
The power of connections, all around.

Another silver Contender
After reading about the new Silver, I went looking for other white thoroughbreds and this one could have played the role as well. Not sure if she is a thoroughbred but she's sure the right color!

Fresh off his win in the Dubai World Cup, Animal Kingdom has landed safely in the UK where he may give Ascot a run for its money! Sources say that either the Queen Anne or the Prince of Wales Stakes are likely next starts for this five year old champion.
While in the UK, Animal Kingdom will be stabled with trainer and friend of Graham Motion, David Lanigan in Lambuorn.
All systems seem go for now. Wouldn't that just be something? The World Cup and Royal Ascot in the same year, on top of the Kentucky Derby! Wow.
