A Good Week for Chimps

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

This was a good week for chimpanzees and the people who love them. The US government decided to reduce their use in invasive biomedical testing and retired hundreds of chimps to sanctuaries like the one in the above video.

In the Nick of Time

A very close call for this Chicago pug whose leash got caught in the elevator door. Quick thinking by a good samaritan saved the day but one has to wonder why the elevator doors closed. Usually they bounce back open when something gets in the way. Memo to self: hold dog tightly and close by when on elevator.

Dolphin Rescue

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Believe it or not, I have been to the Key Largo Island Dolphin facility where Sarah, the dolphin in the above video, lives. It is marvelous place that specializes in water therapy with dolphins for handicapped children and also lets people swim with the dolphins, which is what I did. The story of this procedure is remarkable.

What the Cat Ate

Tigers get hairballs just like cats but this one was so big it had to be surgically removed. 4 lbs to be exact but the prognosis is good for the tiger who must feel much lighter.

Belmont Flashback? No Way.

Have you ever seen such a bunch of tired horses? Palace Malice won but they were all lugging pretty hard down that endless Belmont stretch. There was certainly none of the grace and sheer poetry that defined Secretariat on the day of the 40th anniversary of his 31 length victory.

Old school or not, these horses do not have the stamina or the pedigrees of long ago when not only did they run 1 1/2 miles like it was a walk in the park, they ran races every two or three weeks. Perhaps this is where the drugs take their ultimate toll--on the off spring of those that are supposed to be able to run fast and far.

I am truly glad all the horses made it home safe and sound. You may not see Palace Malice run another race this year. That's how much I think this took out of him. And don't look for miracles from either Oxbow or Orb at Saratoga. These guys may not run (or win) again until the Fall.

How far we have come from the glory days of the sport.

Belmont Preview

$1,000,000 Belmont Stakes (gr. I), 3YOs, 1 1/2 miles (dirt)
Post Horse Jockey Trainer Odds
1 Frac Daddy Alan Garcia Ken McPeek 30-1
2 Freedom Child Luis Saez Tom Albertrani 8-1
3 Overanalyze John Velazquez Todd Pletcher 12-1
4 Giant Finish Edgar Prado Anthony Dutrow 30-1
5 Orb Joel Rosario Shug McGaughey 3-1
6 Incognito Irad Ortiz, Jr. Kiaran McLaughlin 20-1
7 Oxbow Gary Stevens D. Wayne Lukas 5-1
8 Midnight Taboo Garrett Gomez Todd Pletcher 30-1
9 Revolutionary Javier Castellano Todd Pletcher 9-2
10 Will Take Charge Jon Court D. Wayne Lukas 20-1
11 Vyjack Julien Leparoux Rudy Rodriguez 20-1
12 Palace Malice Mike Smith Todd Pletcher 15-1
13 Unlimited Budget Rosie Napravnik Todd Pletcher 8-1
14 Golden Soul Robby Albarado Dallas Stewart 10-1

Here is your field for the Belmont stakes to be run on Saturday. Orb has drawn a good post (#5) and will be the favorite. Oxbow at the seven hole is also in a good position. Truthfully, post positions matters less in a a mile and a half race since there is so much time to move around including the endless stretch at Belmont.

Who do I like? I actually like Vyjack for no reason other than I do and also have a soft spot for Unlimited Budget since it would be great to see Rosie win a leg of the Triple Crown.

I truly do think it is going to be a horse that all of us have overlooked, but that is just my opinion.

Let's hope for a safe trip for all--the forecast is for rain.

This gives new meaning to the phrase, "Have you seen my sheep?" These guys from Uruguay were injected with the substance that makes jellyfish glow in the dark. Otherwise, they are just your average sheep.

Dogs and Technology

This is a fascinating concept--redesigning household items from the dog's point of view so they can provide better assistance to humans and doing it all from a dog's point of view. Makes perfect sense but I don't think they are going to convince Apple to make the i-phone not seem inviting as a chew toy! (That goes for the remote control too!)
