Baby Elephant Raised By Human Mother

This is Moses, an orphaned baby elephant being raised by Jenny Webb, in northern Malawi, after the babe was found wandering alone in the Vwazi Wildlife Reserve. It is believed that Moses' mother was shot by poachers.

Webb, who is the founder of the Jumbo Foundation, an orphanage for large animals, has taken on the task of raising the elephant because Malawi's national parks did not have the funds to do so.

These photos are recent; Moses is now 7 1/2 months old. He sleeps in Webb's house, snuggled with her on an air mattress on the floor. She wakes every two hours to feed him infant formula that is boosted with coconut milk and other vitamins.

And yes, she takes him for walks with her two dogs, and was careful to protect his delicate skin from the sun (hence the blanket in the photo.)

It is a remarkable story of love and devotion. You can find more photos here.
