Playing in E-Time

I belong to an editorial freelance Listserv that often acts as my "water cooler." A few week ago a member posted an entry related to the timing of follow-ups that seemed to strike a nerve. The member had responded to an online advertisement for editorial services and when she did not hear anything two weeks later, she sent a follow up inquiring whether or not they had received her application. She was surprised, angry and offended when the person to whom she had sent the follow-up blasted her, in no uncertain terms, for being "too pushy." The member was told not to bother following up; if they were interested they would let her know.

It seems to me that a lot of e-communication is one way. When I am pursuing a story and am on deadline, I have few qualms about becoming a pest to obtain the information I need. And it never ceases to amaze me how many people don't call you back even when you are giving them free exposure to which they agreed.

Yet, pitch a story, inquire about payment (the bane of my existence) or simply wonder whether or not the recipient could open your attachment and the silence is deafening.

Which brings me to my question. Are the rules of follow-up different in the electronic universe or are people just generally rude? When does one cross that line between "following up" and becoming a pest? How often do you respond to your e-mail and do you ever just ignore some that actually come from people with whom you do business?

I'm curious to know if I'm the only one working on a one way street.

Hi, Kit:

Love the blog. Thanks for sharing your story!

Knowing what it's like to be on the other side of the desk, I try to respond to everyone who contacts me (or at least the ones who address their pitches to me by name rather than spamming the universe with a mass e-mail). But it's frustrating beyond belief to respond to pitches that are completely inappropriate for my publication. Likewise, it's annoying to respond to requests for our writer's guidelines or editorial calendar when those things are clearly linked to our home page. In a busy week, I may not take the time to respond to those who have not bothered to do a minimal amount of homework.

While we're on the subject, here's another editorial pet peeve: Freelancers who -- after I've taken the time to politely explain to them that their pitch is not appropriate for our publication, or that we're overbooked for the next year and I'm not currently taking freelance queries, or that it's a conflict of interest for them to write an article about their employer -- e-mail me back and attempt to argue with me.

And then there are the PR reps ... don't get me started.

You, Kit, on the other hand, have an open invitation to pitch an idea to me at any time.
