Union Rags Impressive in Fountain of Youth

WOW! Union Rags was MOST impressive wining the Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Sunday. Algorithms was scratched on Sunday morning with a popped splint in his right hind but the other Pletcher entry, Discreet Dancer went off the favorite at 4-5.

Julien Leparoux, who inherited the ride on Union Rags after Castellano defected to Algorithims never touched the horse once. A hand ride down the stretch with those long impressive strides that reminded me of you know who.

Click on any one of those highlighted phrases and you will see a replay and then you can add your own superlatives. As for Michael Matz, well here is what he told Bloodhorse when asked if he was as confident in Union Rags as he was with Barbaro:

"Well, Barbaro was an undefeated horse and we had a lot of confidence in him, there was no doubt. If it wasn’t for maybe two feet (Union Rags) would be undefeated, also. I think he’s (Union Rags) a real good horse, he’s a got a real good disposition and I certainly don’t think there’s any problem with distance with him.”

I believe Union Rags is entered in the Florida Derby as one last prep for the big one but as the unfortunate happening with Algorithms underscores, it is still a long way until May.
